Sandwich Magazine #5
Sandwich magazine takes an iconic sandwich and uses it as a lens for cultural essays, features, photo stories and more.
The Brisket Issue features fiction from Will Self, music from Seth Troxler, a visit to the millenia-old traditions of gathering salt in the Bay of Biscay, a dream barbecue featuring Jake Chapman, Ashnikko, Shruti Haasan, Thundercat and Irvine Welsh as guests, a look at hip-hop beefs actually being baloney, the massive amounts of bread we waste in the UK (24 million slices a day!) and a cover profile with DJ BBQ. The issue is supported by Ardbeg Whisky.
If music, Shakespeare mentioned, is the food of love, play on. No doubt he wrote that quote bobbing his head to the beat of a nearby minstrel. Taking heed of the bard’s words, the fifth issue of Sandwich Magazine celebrates the combination of music and food with YouTube sensation DJ BBQ on the cover. He cooked us up a delicious brisket in his back garden for the cover shoot while we chatted about his long history of cooking on the grill, his past life taking a barbecue on location as a snowboard film maker, music video producer and host of the BAFTA-winning extreme sports show, ‘RAD' and his current world of hosting, cooking and DJing at festivals as well as being a best selling author and the host of Ardbeg Whisky’s Bizarre-BBQ World Tour.
Award-winning author Will Self wrote a short piece of fiction about brisket to open the magazine and one of Britain’s best baker David Wright scolds us about the scandalous amount of bread we waste every day (it is an unholy amount).
We travel to Île de Noirmoutier in the Bay of Biscay to discover the millenia-old traditions of making salt and speak to the world record holder for the tallest freestanding sandwich/eminent creative scientist Dr Irwin Eydelnant about the future of food.
The music theme continues throughout this Brisket issue with music writer Oliver Keens discussing whether hip-hop beef is just a load of marketing baloney, the all-conquering rapper Ashnikko, Bollywood icon and singer Shruti Haasan, and multi-Grammy award winner Thundercat tell us their favourite barbecue dishes in as three of our Dream BBQ guests, while world-famous DJ, award-winning chef and barbecue fanatic Seth Troxler to tell us why he loves cooking on the grill and what music he listens to while he does it.
