Aalto Vase, 8", Bubble Glass, Clear
In 1936, Alvar Aalto’s series of glass vases won first prize in the 1936 Karhula-Iittala Glass Design Competition. Compared to the decorative objects of the time, the simple yet organic shape of this vase was a revolutionary statement. Inspired by waves (“aalto” in Finnish) in the water, the vase is a symbol of Finnish design and one of the most famous glass objects in the world.
The Aalto 201 mm bubble glass vase is a striking interpretation of a beloved design classic. Hand made and mouth blown at the Iittala glass factory, each piece carries its own pattern of bubbles. These bubbles are created through a traditional glassblowing method where soda is applied to the molten surface before additional layers of glass are added. The result is a vibrant texture that changes beautifully with the light.
